Only select geese and ducks that have extremely soft and insulating clusters of plume on their breasts are used for "Down". Feathers have a quill which give it a hard element, where as down is a plume which has no hard elements. The quality between geese and duck plume is the same even though they have different colored plume, this does not affect the quality what so ever.
The term fill power is commonly used to describe the quality of "Down". What this is, is a measure of the amount, in cubic inches, that 1 ounce of “Down’ will fill. What this means is the better the insulation a Gosse down comforter gives you the higher the Fill power rating is. Better insulation results from the "Downs" clusters being larger and stronger. This has a better loft to trap air and insulate.
The higher the fill power of the goose down the more expensive it is. It breathes and insulates better because of its larger clusters and this also lasts longer than small down clusters. The smaller down clusters are fragile and lose there insulation very quickly and are primarily used to fill many less expensive, lower quality imported comforters.
To measure the quality of the fabric which encases the goose down, thread count is used. The number of threads in a square inch of fabric determines the thread count. The higher the thread count, the finer the yarn used to weave the fabric. Higher thread count fabrics have softness and comfort which is unmatched compared to lower count fabrics.
When purchasing a goose down comforter / duvet its a good idea to check its fill power and thread count, to get a good idea of the quality of the product. With the higher quality goose down comforters you will pay more but for the superior warmth and comfort it’s well worth while. If you are on a budget, put as much as you can towards your purchase as the better the goose down quality the longer the insulation properties will last.
