This is what you do.

Step One:  Stop

Usually when we are feeling anxious, we don’t want to stop.  Because, we have a tendency to try to run from the fear.

Take the first easy step.  Stop what you are doing.

Ask

You ask yourself questions like these.

What is scary  What is making me anxious?  What are the thoughts I’m having?  What are the thoughts that are under this?  Are there related beliefs? 

Listen

Now listen to what your mind answers.  The answers may surprise you.

Allow whatever comes up to be.  Don’t suppress the answers.  The answers may not seem logical or sane or mature.  That’s ok.  You are getting to know the nature of the human mind.  And with awareness comes power.

I recommend writing down the answers you hear.  All of us wants to have a voice and be heard.

After these first three steps, you’ll likely be feeling more calm already.  This last step can play a role in reversing your tendency to get anxious and set in place new, healthier mental, emotional and physical reactions to stress.
