Our kids grow up in a world of endless choices, especially when it comes to consumption. Just think of all the endless options there are for cereals and milk; in a grocery store, the offerings for each brand alone can take up an entire row. And that’s just for cereals. Our kids’ choice for toys can fill an entire building! Every month, new toys are introduced. Our kids get excited.
After a week of playing with the supposedly latest in robot figures or remote-controlled helicopters, their excitement with their newly purchased toy wears off just as easily and they’re again craving for the new, recently released one. Because of this oversaturation and bombardment, kids are not able to appreciate anything for too long, and go on endlessly pursuing meaningless novelty. If we want our kids to have a full and rich life at an early age and be able to have that until they grow up to become adults, we should teach them the value of timelessness and appreciation. We can start by giving them timeless toys and classic favorites such as wooden train sets.
Seeing the world through toys
Sometimes a toy is not just a toy. It represents things and ideas that our child can absorb, unconsciously. Kids absorb information like a sponge. When we buy and saturate them with disposable plastic toys, their minds will link toys with disposable things that have little value except for instant gratification.
From an early age, they will be used to and wired for instant gratification, taking little time to appreciate the inner beauty of things and the world around them. When you buy them toys that can last for a long time, even forever, one that can be passed on from one generation to the next, you are teaching them the inner value of objects. They will file this information in their little minds and will look at other objects in relatively the same manner. They will be more appreciative, patient and happy with what they have. Kids spend most of their time with their toys and it is where they are able to learn, construct and perceive reality. It is important to buy kids toys that are representative of the world you want them to grow up in. Surely, you don’t want your kids to grow up in a fake plastic world, but in a nurturing, sustainable and natural world.
Wooden trains are one of those toys that represent the real world and at the same time, are made from natural materials that can be appreciated by a child or even an adult.
The beauty of wood
Wood has a natural elegance, because its material is sourced from nature and is crafted by human hands unlike most factory-made toys that are made from synthetic materials and are built by machines. Intrinsically and aesthetically, wooden toys have more value. The best thing about a wooden train is that it is timeless—it can be appreciated by kids, young boys and girls, teenagers, and even adults. Across any age bracket, trains made of wood will find their niche.
Parents and their children can play with these trains and spend a day setting up tracks. Not only are wooden toy trains amusing and entertaining, they are also ornamental. Even if your kids grow older and no longer play with their wooden toy train, you can always place it in their room as decoration so they can be reminded of their boyhood or simply give the room a whimsical touch. Wooden toy trains can also look elegant in dens, playrooms, or recreational rooms and will never be out-of-place in any type of décor because of wood’s natural elegance and aesthetic flexibility.
Inconvenience is good sometimes
Take it from Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth. If you have been living in a cave for the past two years and have not yet been bitten by the eco-consciousness bug, then it’s about time you have. And it’s not just your personal consumption that you should be conscious about. Sometimes, when we think going green is about buying Free Trade goods, organic makeup, local produce, and segregating our trash. When it comes to buying stuff for our children however, we can’t help but indulge them with their favorite junk food and latest toys and games. Most of the time, it’s more convenient to buy cheap plastic toys because kids easily outgrow their toys anyway so you want something that is disposable. What we don’t really want to think about when we consume in the most convenient way possible is the long term consequences. Plastic toys are harmful for the environment because they are unsustainable. They do not decompose and therefore pollute the earth forever. In a year’s time of buying and disposing plastic toys, you would have accumulated a roomful of junk that will go on existing until you and your children are long gone from earth. Wooden toys on the other hand are made of one of the most sustainable natural resources on earth: trees!
Learning to consume intelligently
Not just because they are made of wood doesn’t mean they are already good for your kids however. Sometimes wooden train accessories are made of synthetic materials and are simply combined with wooden parts. Check to see that you are buying an authentic wooden train set. There are also some toys made of illegally logged wood. To avoid buying toys from illegally sourced wood, opt for toys that have an FSC certification. This is to ensure that the toy was made from sustainable resources. Looking into the company’s background and history, which can be easily done through online research, is a good way of ensuring its authenticity and ethical background. You can also check that every detail, from the paint they used to the labor that went into making the toy, is up to your eco-standards. At this age where all information can be easily accessed, there’s no excuse for not consuming intelligently.
